The Shipwell Story
We founded Shipwell with an ambitious idea: to be the easiest, most automated way for any business to ship anything anywhere.
This idea came from a problem, which we’d seen many times before.
A close friend was managing a small vineyard. He’d spent days trying to find a competitive price to ship his wine casks. (He still ended up overpaying.) He had no idea where the shipment was located when in transit, or even when it would arrive.
The rest of us had similar experiences going back several decades. We realized that freight shipping has never been easy, transparent, or delightful – no matter the size of your business.
The reason was simple. Despite the fact that over 80% of goods in the US are moved by truck, the majority of the freight business is still offline and incredibly manual.
Meanwhile, there are only a few large industry leaders that have turned their shipping operations into a competitive advantage. But they aren’t looking to share.
We started Shipwell to provide an alternative.
One that fits into your life, adds value to your business, and delights your customers.
Shipwell provides a seamless freight experience at competitive prices without unnecessary complication by automating grunt work. We’re bringing truckers online, and putting everything into one platform.
We believe that every business should be able to ship well.
Greg Price, CEO & Co-founder
While a consultant at McKinsey & Co, Greg helped Fortune 100 companies create ambitious initiatives that led to $100M+ in earnings. Greg was surprised that businesses could not answer seemingly simple logistics questions crucial to running a world-class supply chain. Too often they didn’t know where their shipments were or what best-in-class procurement and vendor performance looked like. In the age of fast, “free”, efficient shipping, these companies have to adapt to survive but their technological options are limited. He started Shipwell to apply his engineering and machine learning background to the transportation market. Greg previously spent 7 years working at MIT’s Lincoln Labs doing machine learning for the US Department of Defense. He holds Masters degrees in Business and Engineering from MIT.
Jason Traff, President & Co-founder
Jason has firsthand experience with the challenges of shipping freight from CopyCat Paintings, the art business he started in Shenzhen, China. The company eventually employed over 1,000 artists and shipped paintings all over the world. After selling that business, he returned to the US to attend MIT and subsequently dropped out after founding Leaky, an online insurance marketplace that went through Y-Combinator. Selling $300 million of insurance, he saw the power of applying technology to an otherwise manual industry. With Shipwell, Jason is combining his love of technology and his knowledge of logistics.
